Join us for the official launch of Green Star Fitouts – GBCA’s new rating tool for the sustainable design and construction of fitouts.

Replaced every 5–7 years, fitouts are one of the most frequently updated, and least examined, elements of the built environment. Each cycle influences embodied carbon, waste, health and cost outcomes, yet these impacts are often overlooked or treated as short-term decisions.

Developed in response to growing industry focus on embodied carbon, circularity and healthier interiors, Green Star Fitouts provides a clear, practical framework to guide more sustainable fitout decisions across projects and portfolios. Importantly, it is the first rating tool to embed circularity as a core requirement for fitouts – setting a new benchmark for how interior projects are designed and delivered.

In this webinar, we’ll cover:

  • Why fitouts are a critical sustainability issue that can no longer be overlooked

  • An overview of the new categories, including the world-first Circular category

  • How the rating tool works, including key Minimum Expectations

  • Key registration details and transition timeframes

  • You’ll also have the opportunity to hear directly from the team behind the tool, ask questions, and gain insights from industry representatives who have tested Green Star Fitouts to date.

Speakers:

  • Kylie Fleury, General Manager – Forever Fitout, Dexus

  • Paul Stoller, Director, Atelier Ten

  • Sian Willmott, Sustainable Design Leader, Hassell

  • Taryn Cornell, Senior Manager, Strategy & Development, Green Building Council of Australia

  • Gabrielle Pavicic, Green Star Program Lead, Green Building Council of Australia

We will have our first Advanced training course on the new Fitsouts tools on the 28th May.  It will be open for more information and bookings shortly, but contact education@gbca.org.au to register your interest.

Waste is no longer just something to divert, it’s a valuable resource.

As we shift from a historic focus on landfill diversion to a more sophisticated, outcomes-driven approach grounded in circular economy principles, how do we embrace the next evolution of waste management in the built environment?

In this session, we’ll examine how our understanding of waste has changed, from measuring what we throw away, to designing out waste from the earliest stages of a project. We’ll unpack how this shift is influencing project decision-making across design, construction, fit out and operations across Australia’s built environment and highlight opportunities to unlock greater value from materials and resources.

Hear key insights from the Australia’s Wasted Opportunity benchmarking report, and examine how Green Star pathways can be used to embed circular economy principles, supporting projects to reduce emissions, recover materials and create long-term value.

Through real world case studies, hear practical strategies for minimising waste and integrating sustainable design. From material reuse to planning and specification in innovative fit outs, you’ll gain insights into how to drive efficiency and improve sustainability outcomes across different asset types.

The session includes interactive discussion, giving attendees the opportunity to share challenges, learn from peers and explore how these approaches can be applied within their own projects and organisations.

Embodied carbon represents a significant proportion of whole-life building emissions, and is set to climb dramatically by 2050. Eliminating embodied carbon from the supply chain is critical, but the pathways to achieve this are complex, requiring new design thinking, innovative technology, and strong industry collaboration. How can we work together to overcome barriers and accelerate change to remove embodied carbon from the built environment and drive towards a net-zero future?

In this masterclass our speakers will help you understand the scale and importance of focusing on embodied carbon, examine drivers and barriers for reducing it, and explore practical examples of how to reduce this through materials selection, building design and project management.

A combination of expert panels, practical case studies, and interactive discussion groups will allow you to take a deep dive into this crucial and intensifying topic.

Join your peers to share experiences, discuss challenges and get your burning questions answered, as we examine how to eliminate embodied carbon from the built environment.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to measure embodied carbon, what methodologies and tools are available, and what data to collect

  • Discover new innovations in low carbon materials and what manufacturers are doing to further reduce embodied carbon

  • Examine availability and supply of reduced carbon materials and how to make smarter choice when selecting materials for projects

  • Discuss when to engage and invest in different parts of the supply chain to ensure optimal decarbonised design

  • Hear about experiences and lessons learned from managing low embodied carbon projects
