On average, Australian families spend 90% of their time indoors, with two thirds of this at home. So it’s not surprising to hear that 57% of Australia’s built environment emissions come from our homes. If we are serious about limiting global warming to below 1.5 degrees, as committed to in the Paris Agreement, we can’t ignore our homes.

Australian households also pay amongst the highest energy bills in the world. Most households pay between $1,600 to $1,900 on average, per year. The Green Star Homes Standard outlines a path to deliver net zero energy homes. A net zero energy home is one that has been built to generate enough renewable energy to power all estimated regulated loads as well as estimated appliance and plug loads. They do not use gas. When operated well, these homes will not only save money in reduced bills, but will also be built to be net zero in operations.

Please join us for this webinar as we take a deeper look at the Positive category of the Green Star Homes Standard.

You will gain an understanding of the net zero energy requirements of the Green Star Homes Standard and will also hear from industry leaders who have worked extensively in the residential sector to deliver net zero energy homes.

Global climate change is affecting all facets of life and many of these impacts are being felt today. Increased frequency and intensity of natural disasters such as bushfire, flooding and extreme heat, detrimentally affect our built environment, including our homes. This in turn impacts our health and wellbeing, and the reliability of infrastructure. These changes challenge the way we build and has broader implications to the community.

At Green Building Council of Australia, our vision is to create healthy, resilient and positive places. This includes our homes. A resilient home is one that has been built to be more robust than required by the minimum building standard and is thus able to better withstand natural disasters and future climate change conditions.

Please join us for this webinar where we take a deep dive into the Resilient category of the Green Star Homes Standard. We will also be joined by an experienced panel with expertise in climate risk and resilience and what this means at an industry, community and home level.

In June we announced our 2020 Green Star Champions, a new GBCA award, recognising the vision, passion and commitment of leaders across our industry who work tirelessly to deliver a more sustainable built environment using our Green Star certification program.

The Green Star Homes Standard aims to create healthy, resilient and net zero energy homes for all Australians.  What does it mean to create a healthy home and what are the requirements of the Standard to help demonstrate this? As recent events have shown, the impact our homes have on us physically is significant. We spend 90% of our time indoors with two thirds of this being at home.

Our homes, and where they are located, influences every aspect of our lives. There is an increasing body of work establishing the links between housing and an individual’s health and  wellbeing. Higher use of air conditioning, poor ventilation and issues such as mould can negatively impact a person’s health.

Please join us for this webinar, where we will take a deep dive into the Healthy category of the Green Star Homes Standard, where these issues and more are addressed. As well as gaining a deeper understanding of the requirements of the Standard, you will also hear from three speakers who will discuss the importance of a healthy home and how they are working to achieve this.

Australia’s population is set to continue growing to 31 million people by 2030, which means an additional 197,000 new homes will need to be constructed per year. Our homes are where we spend two thirds of our time, so it’s not surprising to hear that 57% of Australia’s built environment emissions come from our homes. If we are serious about limiting global warming to below 1.5 degrees, as committed to in the Paris Agreement, we can’t ignore our homes. This is why we are committed to improving the standard of new homes built in Australia through a voluntary framework. Green Star for Homes is a national standard that assesses and certifies a home.

Green Star certified homes will be nationally recognised as:

  • Healthy: ventilated, comfortable, with products that are better for you;
  • Resilient: water efficient and climate change ready; and
  • Net zero energy: fully electric, draught sealed, efficient and powered by renewables.

This webinar will provide an introduction to the Green Star for Homes draft standard and how it is aligned to other schemes and the proposed 2022 National Construction Code update.

This webinar is suitable to all those interested or working in residential housing and those wanting to know more about the Green Star for Homes standard.

Join us online as we share our new report Green Star in focus: Industrial, released jointly by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) and the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC).

This work warns of the increasing risk of significant industrial assets becoming stranded if they can’t show that they are low or zero carbon and demonstrates the business case for sustainable industrial buildings and sustainable, independently certified assets. It finds that new Green Star certified industrial buildings produce 66% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than standard buildings and shows that a minimal 2% upfront cost to support green design can result, on average, in lifecycle savings of 20% of total construction costs.

The report underscores that the technology, design, materials and expertise are available now to build more sustainable buildings which will meet investors’ growing demand for future-proofed investments that uphold environmental and social governance principles.
