4 Star Green Star — Design & As Built v1.3

All-electric, efficient and designed for long-term community value, the new AFL, cricket and netball pavilion at Clyde Recreation Reserve sets a clear benchmark for council-led facilities.

“Achieving Green Star Certification is a significant milestone in building design and construction, and the City of Casey are proud to contribute to a more sustainable future,” said Michael Barrett, Manager City Design and Construction.

City of Casey pursued certification to align with its Environment Strategy and to embed sustainability in community infrastructure. “Our decision aligns with Council’s Environment Strategy, which commits to embedding sustainability into infrastructure and reducing emissions. Green Star certification ensures the facility meets high environmental standards and supports our goal to become a climate-resilient city,” Barrett said.

"We recognise that renewable energy will play a key role in achieving the 2030 net-zero corporate emissions goal. All new buildings will have 100% electric infrastructure, such as electric kitchen appliances, heating and hot water. Council also seeks to ‘create a water efficient city’. Our Integrated Water Management Plan commits to a 30 per cent reduction in Council’s 2030 projected water use by 2031".

Sustainability in action

100% electric infrastructure across kitchen appliances, heating and hot water

Efficient electrical systems with daylight and motion-sensor lighting, separate metering for all services, and a rooftop solar system exporting to the grid

Water-smart hydraulics: heat-pump hot water, rainwater reuse for toilet flushing, metered consumption and leak detection during non-operational hours

Mechanical systems with reverse-cycle plant and heat recovery, plus effective ventilation and exhaust for kitchens and amenities

EV charging stations supporting low-emissions travel

Place-responsive design: native landscaping, integration with nearby community and educational facilities, and public art that reflects environmental and cultural themes

Lessons learnt

A key takeaway from the project team was that there is a huge benefit in engaging with a builder for the construction phase that is experienced in Green Star.

Delivering the ambition required early and consistent alignment. And while some design and construction documentation initially didn’t have enough detail for the contractors to follow to achieve green star credits, the team worked closely with the consultants and contractors to prepare additional drawings and reports to clearly demonstrate compliance with credits.

The contractor wanted to propose alternative products other than specified products due to supply issue during COVID times, and the alternative products didn’t meet the sustainable material criteria. The project team at the City of Casey coordinated with the supplier and the design architect to find and utilise proper alternative products to achieve the same outcome.

The redevelopment of Clyde Recreation Reserve was awarded the 2024 AFL Victoria Best Community Facilities Project Award, recognising best practice in community football facility development across the state. The facility is home to the Casey Crusaders Rugby Union Club, Clyde Junior Football Club, Southern Warriors Cricket Club, Clyde Cricket Club and the Clyde Tennis Club.
