From Green Star Interiors to Green Star Fitouts

Building on the foundation of Green Star Interiors, the new Fitouts tool responds to the key sustainability challenges shaping today’s market. Green Star Fitouts introduces key changes:

1. A stronger focus on circularity

A world-first category, the Circular category guides teams on designing interiors that generate less waste and adapt over time.

2. Clear minimum expectations

The new tool establishes a set of minimum requirements that every project must meet – creating a strong, consistent baseline.

3. A more holistic approach

Green Star Fitouts takes a broader view – addressing the full spectrum of sustainability impacts including carbon, circularity, materials, health and social impact, within a single, integrated framework.

4. A sharper focus on fitouts

Green Star Fitouts places greater emphasis on elements within the control of the tenant or fitout owner, rather than how the base building impacts the interior. This shift in focus is reflected in the evolution from ‘Green Star – Interiors’ to ‘Green Star Fitouts’.

A collaborative development process

Green Star Fitouts was developed through extensive industry consultation, engaging more than 500 professionals across the property and construction sector.

Transition timings

Green Star Interiors remains open for registration until 30 September 2026.
From 1 October 2026 all new fitout projects must register under Green Star Fitouts.
Projects already registered under Green Star Interiors may continue under their approved timelines.

FAQs

When is Green Star Fitouts mandatory?
From 1 October 2026, all new fitout projects seeking certification must register under Green Star Fitouts.

When can projects register?
Projects can register under Green Star Fitouts from the official launch of the new rating tool, 17 March 2026.

When can projects start submitting for certification?
Submissions for certification under Green Star Fitouts will open in July 2026. The date will be advertised closer to the time.

What are the transition timings?
Green Star Interiors will remain available for new registrations until end of September. During the transition period new projects can register to either Green Star – Interiors or Green Star Fitouts. At the end of the transition period (from 1 October 2026), all new registrations must be under Green Star Fitouts.

Can I upgrade my Green Star Interiors project to the new Green Star Fitouts tool?
Yes! Projects registered under Green Star Interiors may freely upgrade to Green Star Fitouts. There is no additional cost.

Ongoing updates and review

As part of our commitment to ensuring Green Star Fitouts continues to deliver strong, credible outcomes, the rating tool will be reviewed and updated on a regular cycle.

This ensures it remains aligned with emerging trends, industry expectations and the strategic direction of the Green Building Council of Australia.

Update framework:

Regular revisions (revisions) – will result in a release of a revised rating tool. Additional reviews will occur throughout a year should a correction be deemed necessary. e.g. Revision A
Three to five year rating tool revisions (minor updates) – with amended criteria or requirements to ensure rating tools are up to date. Will result in a release of a new rating tool version. e.g. v1.1, v2.1.
Major revision – Occurs to align rating tools with new trends or revised GBCA strategy. Results in the release of new rating tool.
