Reimagining waste and embedding circularity in the Built Environment

29 April @ 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm AEST

Waste is no longer just something to divert, it’s a valuable resource.

As we shift from a historic focus on landfill diversion to a more sophisticated, outcomes-driven approach grounded in circular economy principles, how do we embrace the next evolution of waste management in the built environment?

In this session, we’ll examine how our understanding of waste has changed, from measuring what we throw away, to designing out waste from the earliest stages of a project. We’ll unpack how this shift is influencing project decision-making across design, construction, fit out and operations across Australia’s built environment and highlight opportunities to unlock greater value from materials and resources.

Hear key insights from the Australia’s Wasted Opportunity benchmarking report, and examine how Green Star pathways can be used to embed circular economy principles, supporting projects to reduce emissions, recover materials and create long-term value.

Through real world case studies, hear practical strategies for minimising waste and integrating sustainable design. From material reuse to planning and specification in innovative fit outs, you’ll gain insights into how to drive efficiency and improve sustainability outcomes across different asset types.

The session includes interactive discussion, giving attendees the opportunity to share challenges, learn from peers and explore how these approaches can be applied within their own projects and organisations.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to shift focus to view waste as a resource to be recovered and repurposed.

  • Embed circular economy principles from early design to fit out and operations.

  • How to use Green Star tools and pathways

  • Discover successful strategies from real-world case studies
