Reimagining waste and embedding circularity in the Built Environment

29 Apr 2026

Agenda

 Wednesday 29 April, 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm

 12.30pm   Welcome and introduction

Speaker: Gabrielle Pavicic, Green Star Program Lead, Green Building Council of Australia

12.35pm   Designing for resource sensitivity in Green Star

This session will guide you through the Green Star credits related to resource use, helping you understand which tools and pathways are available to support certification. Learn how to design with resource efficiency in mind while meeting the requirements for circularity, waste reduction and sustainable material selection.

Speaker: Madeline Cunico, Green Star Technical Coordinator, Green Building Council of Australia

12.50pm   Future Focus: Australia’s Waste [d] opportunity

Hear about the findings from a new industry-first report revealing the high volume of waste from the average building project. The report, developed by Coreo in partnership with the Green Building Council of Australia and funded by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, offers a platform to build a future based on value. The report sets national waste benchmarks and outlines a practical plan to cut emissions, reduce costs, and recover more value through circular design and smarter material choices.

Speaker: Taylah de Wit, Systems & Circular Specialist, Coreo

1.20pm   Discussion Groups: Delivering Waste Outcomes in Green Star Projects: Challenges and opportunities

Attendees will break into smaller facilitated groups to discuss the most effective way of approaching the waste credit in Green Star Buildings

  • Are you currently working on a Green Star Project? If so, what are the challenges in implementing the requirements?
  • What action do you think would most help reduce wasted material outcomes on your next project?
  • In what stages of design is it best or worst represented?

Hosts: Madeline Cunico, Green Star Technical Coordinator, Green Building Council of Australia & Gabrielle Pavicic, Green Star Program Lead, Green Building Council of Australia

1.40pm   Designing out Waste: Pathways to a circular economy with Green Star

Hear practical strategies to minimise waste and integrate sustainable design, driving efficiency and sustainability in the built environment. This session will explore how Green Star can be used to embed circular economy principles from the earliest stages of design, helping projects reduce emissions, recover materials and create long- term value.

Speakers: Shruti Thomas, Senior Sustainability Consultant, Arcadis

2.10pm   BREAK

2.20pm Case study: Commonwealth Bank Lighthouse Project

Join us to hear about SHAPE’s largest fit out, which achieved a prestigious 6-star Green Star rating by prioritising circular economy principles, extensive reuse of on-site materials and sustainable design and construction practices

Speakers: Jasmin Taylor, Environmental Sustainability Manager – Projects, SHAPE & Paul Rosenberg Vella, National Manager, ALD & Co Founder & Director, Refit8

2.50pm Case Study: Waterfront Brisbane

Learn more about how this project has salvaged and recycled materials including the groundbreaking treatment of core filled polystyrene concrete. We’ll also take a look at how some of the recovered materials will appear in the new building.

Speaker: Nicki Parker, Associate, Sustainability, Aurecon

3.20pm    Session wrap up and close
